Legally speaking: Yes, at least in some cases. While a digital copy is usually sufficient, the tax office (Finanzamt) may ask for the original in the event of an audit. ⚖️

So, make sure to keep your receipts safe!


How long do I need to keep my receipts in Germany?

  • Invoices, booking receipts, tax documents: 8 years (it used to be 10).

  • Business letters & other tax-relevant documents: 6 years.

The retention period starts at the end of the calendar year in which the document was created.
