Still waiting on your Steuernummer (tax number) after submitting your Fragebogen zur steuerlichen Erfassung? If it’s been more than 6 or 7 weeks, don’t stress. Here’s what to check and how to follow up.

📨 1. Double-Check your mailbox

Start with the basics. Make sure:

  • Your full name is visible on your mailbox.

  • You haven’t overlooked the letter - it often looks like a standard Finanzamt (tax office) letter, not something eye-catching.

Here’s what it typically looks like:

☎️ 2. Reach out to your local Finanzamt

If nothing has arrived, it’s time to contact the Finanzamt that handles your registration:

  • Call or email them directly.

  • Mention when you submitted your Fragebogen and give your full address.

  • A friendly tone goes a long way - this is just a check-in.

👉 You can find your local Finanzamt office via this link.

🔍 Usually, it’s the office closest to your registered home address.

You can use this informal template as a sample letter to send to your Finanzamt:

❓ 3. Ask If anything’s missing

Sometimes the Finanzamt holds back your Steuernummer because they need extra information. It’s worth asking:

“Is anything missing from my Fragebogen zur steuerlichen Erfassung (tax registration questionnaire)?”

They’ll check your file and let you know exactly what’s needed - no guesswork, no resubmitting the whole form (unless they specifically ask for it).
